Paying Bridge Tolls

All Bay Area toll bridges have switched to automatic toll collection. Cash payment is no longer collected at any of the eight toll bridges.

There are four ways to pay bridge tolls: FasTrak®, License Plate Account, One-Time Payment, and Invoice.

Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District manages operations on the Golden Gate Bridge.

Tolls on the Golden Gate Bridge vary by vehicle occupancy, vehicle type, and payment method. For the toll rates on the Golden Gate Bridge, visit www.goldengate.org/tolls. To qualify for the discounted carpool rate, you must meet the eligibility requirements, use designated carpool lanes, and pay the toll with FasTrak.

State-Owned Bridges

The Bay Area Toll Authority (BATA) collects tolls on the seven state-owned toll bridges in the Bay Area: Antioch, Benicia-Martinez, Carquinez, Dumbarton, Richmond-San Rafael, San Francisco-Oakland, and San Mateo-Hayward bridges. Tolls on the state-owned toll bridges vary by bridge, time of day, vehicle occupancy, and vehicle type. Find a list of bridge toll rates here. To qualify for the discounted carpool rate, you must meet the eligibility requirements, use designated carpool lanes, and pay the toll with FasTrak.

Four Ways to Pay

Toll payment is made with a FasTrak toll tag or by processing an image of your vehicle’s license plate.

FasTrak®

FasTrak automatically deducts tolls from a prepaid account using a toll tag attached to your vehicle. You can add more money to your account automatically with a credit card (the easiest way to ensure your FasTrak account always has funds) or with cash, check, or money order. There are no fees to open a FasTrak account, get a toll tag, or use it to pay your tolls.*

Paying with FasTrak is the only way to receive discounted tolls for carpools, motorcycles, and eligible clean air vehicles, as well as the lowest toll rate on the Golden Gate Bridge.

License Plate Account

License Plate Accounts are an option for drivers who choose to “pay as they go.” A License Plate Account uses your license plate number to identify your vehicle and matches it to your account. If the account is linked to a credit card, the toll is charged to the card each time your vehicle crosses a bridge. There is no prepaid balance required and there are no extra fees.

If the account is opened using cash, check, or money order, you must have a prepaid toll balance and the toll is deducted from the balance each time your vehicle crosses a bridge. There are no extra fees. *

One-Time Payment

If you’re visiting or only in the area for a short time, a One-Time Payment may be best for you. One-Time Payments are set up for a short, specific period of time and can be used to pay a toll after you cross a bridge (within 48 hours) or for future tolls (up to 30 days). There are no extra fees for One-Time Payments.

Your license plate number will be used to link your vehicle to your payment. A One-Time Payment can be made online with a credit card or paid with cash at Cash Payment Locations. *

Invoice

If you don’t choose any of the other three methods, an invoice will be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle. The invoice will be for the amount of the bridge toll(s) with no additional fees. Invoices must be paid on time or they will accrue additional fees and penalties.
